LOVE TO CHRIST

410.010.000       Torrey: p388, T:I
Topic 10:   Its Importance

410.010.010       Torrey: p388, T:I, P:1
POINT 10:   Supreme love to Christ is the condition of Christian discipleship.

Matthew 10:35-38 [35] For I have come to turn "`a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law -- [36] a man's enemies will be the members of his own household.' [37] "Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; [38] and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

Luke 14:26 If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters -- yes, even his own life -- he cannot be my disciple.

(Note: This is a poor translation in the King James Version that has persisted in other translations. The Greek word translated "hate" in this passage actually means "love less." Hence, this passage should read:

"If anyone comes to me and does not love his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters -- yes, even his own life -- less [than he loves me] he cannot be my disciple.")

Christ in the New Testament claims the same supreme love for Himself that Jehovah in the Old Testament claims for Himself. Here is undoubted proof of the Divinity of Christ. Unless Christ has a place in our hearts above father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yea, and his own life, we cannot be his disciples.

410.010.010       Torrey: p388, T:I, P:2
POINT 20:   Love to Christ (though we do not see Him) is an unfailing mark of the elect.

1 Peter 1:8 [8] Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy,

410.010.010       Torrey: p388, T:I, P:3
POINT 30:   If we are children of God we will love Christ.

John 8:42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me.

Absence of love to Christ is decisive proof that one is not a child of God.

410.010.010       Torrey: p389, T:I, P:4
POINT 40:   Any one who does not love Christ will be Anathema at the coming of Christ, i.e., "devoted without hope of being redeemed", "doomed to destruction."

1 Corinthians 16:22 If anyone does not love the Lord -- a curse be on him. Come, O Lord!

410.020.000       Torrey: p389, T:II
Topic 20:   How Love to Christ is Manifested

410.020.010       Torrey: p389, T:II, P:1
POINT 10:   Love to Christ is manifested by keeping His words and commandments. (The same thing that is said elsewhere of love to God.)

John 14:15, 21, 23 [15] "If you love me, you will obey what I command. [21] Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him." [23] Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

410.020.020       Torrey: p389, T:II, P:2
POINT 20:   Love to Christ is manifested by our not living for ourselves, but for Him who died and rose again for our sakes.

2 Corinthians 5:14-15 [14] For Christ's love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. [15] And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.

410.020.030       Torrey: p389, T:II, P:3
POINT 30:   Love to Christ is manifested by feeding His lambs and shepherding His sheep.

John 21:15-17 [15] When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?" "Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my lambs." [16] Again Jesus said, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me?" He answered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Take care of my sheep." [17] The third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my sheep.

410.020.040       Torrey: p390, T:II, P:4
POINT 40:   Love to Christ is manifested by ministering to Him.

Luke 7:44-47 [44] Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. [45] You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. [46] You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. [47] Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven -- for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little."

   How can we?

Matthew 25:40 The King will reply, "I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."

410.020.050       Torrey: p390, T:II, P:5
POINT 50:   Love to Christ is manifested by counting all things but loss and gladly sacrificing them for His sake.

Philippians 3:7-8 [7] But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. [8] What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ [9] and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ -- the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.

410.020.060       Torrey: p390, T:II, P:6
POINT 60:   Love to Christ is manifested by a willingness to suffer and to die for His name.

Acts 21:13 Then Paul answered, "Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus."

410.020.070       Torrey: p390, T:II, P:7
POINT 70:   Love to Christ manifests itself in a desire to be with Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:8 We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.

410.020.080       Torrey: p391, T:II, P:8
POINT 80:   Love to Christ manifests itself in a longing for His appearing.

2 Timothy 4:8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day -- and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

Revelation 22:20 [20] He who testifies to these things says, "Yes, I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

410.030.000       Torrey: p391, T:III
Topic 30:   Results of Love to Christ

410.030.010       Torrey: p391, T:III, P:1
POINT 10:   There is grace for all who love Jesus Christ in sincerity.

Ephesians 6:24 Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love.

410.030.020       Torrey: p391, T:III, P:2(a)
POINT 20:   Those who love Christ are loved by the Father.

John 14:21 Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him."

John 14:23 Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

God loves all men, but he has an especial love for those who love His Son.

Compare John 17:23 I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

410.030.030       Torrey: p391, T:III, P:2(b)
POINT 30:   Those who love Christ are loved by Christ.

John 14:21-23 [21] Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him." [22] Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, "But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?" [23] Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

410.030.040       Torrey: p391, T:III, P:2(c)
POINT 40:   Christ manifests Himself to those who love Him.

John 14:15-16, 23 [15] "If you love me, you will obey what I command. [16] And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever -- [23] Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

John 16:14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.

410.030.050       Torrey: p391, T:III, P:2(d)
POINT 50:   The Father and Christ make their abode with those who love Christ.

John 14:23 Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

410.030.060       Torrey: p391, T:III, P:3
POINT 60:   The Father's gift of the Holy Spirit as the Paraclete to abide with and be in us, is for those who love Christ.

John 14:15-17 [15] "If you love me, you will obey what I command. [16] And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever -- [17] the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

410.030.070       Torrey: p392, T:III, P:4
POINT 70:   At His coming the Lord will give a crown of righteousness to all who love His appearing.

2 Timothy 4:8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day -- and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

410.040.000       Torrey: p392, T:IV
Topic 40:   How Can We Attain unto Love Christ?

410.040.010       Torrey: p392, T:IV, P:1
POINT 10:   Love to Christ arises from a realization of our sin and from faith in the wondrous pardoning love of Christ.

Luke 7:47-50 [47] Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven -- for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little." [48] Then Jesus said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." [49] The other guests began to say among themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?" [50] Jesus said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

1 Timothy 1:12-15 [12] I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service. [13] Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. [14] The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. [15] Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners -- of whom I am the worst.

Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

1 John 4:10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
