Topic 20:The Nine Gifts.

295.020.010
POINT 10: Wisdom.

1 Corinthians 12:8, New English Bible One man, through the Spirit, has the gift of wise speech, ...

295.020.020
POINT 20: Communication of knowledge.

1 Corinthians 12:8, New English Bible ... another by the power of the same Spirit, can put the deepest knowledge into words.

295.020.030
POINT 30: Faith.

1 Corinthians 12:9, New English Bible Another, by the same Spirit, is granted faith;

295.020.040
POINT 40: Gifts of healing.

1 Corinthians 12:9 ... to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,

295.020.050
POINT 50:    Miraculous Powers.

1 Corinthians 12:10 to another miraculous powers, ...

295.020.060
POINT 60:    The Gift of Prophecy.

1 Corinthians 12:10, New English Bible ... another has the gift of prophecy ...

295.020.070
POINT 70:    The ability to distinguish true spirits from false.

1 Corinthians 12:10, New English Bible ... another ability to distinguish true spirits from false;

Compare: 1 John 4:1- 3 [1] Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. [2] This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, [3] but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

This seems so simple it hardly seems worth mentioning. In fact, many sincere Christians, even many members of the clergy, are now being misled by valid Christian doctrine mixed with ever-increasing amounts of what the Bible refers to as "leaven", the biblical symbol for false doctrine. Shamanistic witchcraft/sorcery practices expressly forbidden by God are being advocated by some well-meaning, albeit misguided, Christians under new names, e.g. "visualization", meditation, or yoga. Psychotherapists, sociologists, and various other "social experts" ever more strongly advocate increasingly radical humanistic philosophies that have no support even among their peers and no basis in scientific study, and yet such advocates are increasingly portrayed by the media as "leading edge thinkers", e.g., Freudian and Jungian psychotherapy, and the "Jesus Seminar."

POINT 80:    Speaking in different kinds of tongues.

1 Corinthians 12:10 ... to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, ...

Biblically, there are two types of "speaking in tongues."

1 Corinthians 13:1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, ...

The second type of "speaking in tongues" was evidenced at the Pentecost:

Acts 2:6, 8, 11 [6] When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. [8] Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? [11] (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs -- we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!"

295.020.090
POINT 90: The interpretation of tongues.

1 Corinthians 12:10 ... to still another the interpretation of tongues.

Surprisingly, a person who "speaks in tongues" usually has no idea what he is saying! The ability to interpret the speech is a separate gift. It should be noted that the gift is the ability to interpret, not the ability to translate. Therefore, the speaker could go on at length and the interpreter might say only one or two sentences, because he is presenting the interpretation of the speech, not a translation.

1 Corinthians 12:30 [30] Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?
